UN statistics tell us that one in three women will be raped or beaten in her lifetime. That's over ONE BILLION people on the planet.
On February 14, 2013, V-Day led a global action called ONE BILLION RISING, calling upon women and the men who love us to STRIKE DANCE RISE. Over ONE BILLION people in over 200 countries rose in a commitment to ending violence against women & girls. We danced as a form of protest - as a way to reclaim our bodies, our space, and our spirits. We marched. We passed legislation. We prayed. We spoke out.
On February 14, 2014, we escalated our efforts, calling on women and men everywhere to RISE, RELEASE, DANCE, and demand JUSTICE! In our justice campaign we made visible, volatile and impacting connections between violence against women and economic, environmental, racial, gender injustice. Here in Los Angeles, we rose at prisons for true reform of the justice system. We rose on television sets to demand a shift in media coverage and representation of women. We rose at a memorial for veterans to demand justice for survivors of sexual assault in the military. We rose at LA City Hall to speak truth to - and with - power.
The campaign in 2015 is a call to bring on revolutionary justice.
Imagine what your community will look like when violence against women and girls is over. Then go create it.
